Plants That Sing and Trees That Talk: A universe that is infinitely connected.
As humans, we take the evergreens around us for granted; assuming that plants are plants and trees are trees, both of which grow abundantly. While many of us are surrounded by an abundance of green growth that does seem endless, the splendor of this natural state is diminishing.
Every living plant, whether it’s a short shrub or a towering tree, possess the ability to communicate with other plants and trees. Think of how often you’ve read a story or heard a tale of how the leaves of trees make sounds; some that haunt and some that sound like music.
In the far reaches of northern Italy, between Turin and Aosta, is the community of Damanhur, a Federation of Spiritual Communities. This multilingual Eco-community of approximately 600 people promotes the diversity, positive thinking and changes as strategies against habitude.
It is for this reason Damanhur is the destination of thousands of visitors each year, attracting a vast array of intellects from scholars and researchers to others who arrive to submerge themselves in spirituality, art, sciences and environmental sustainability.
In 2005, Damanhur obtained recognition as a model of sustainable society by the Global Human Settlements Forum of ONU. According to the vision of the Damanhurians, life is constantly changing and renewed through the relationships and connection with others.
Just as connection and communication are important to humans, it is also important to plant life. Through a research group led by Damanhur members, they discovered trees are losing their connection and communication with each other. From this research was born a program called Alliance with Trees; a program meant to help trees awaken their communication with each other.
Esperide, spokeswoman from the Alliance, recently visited New York City. She told a group of us about this “extraordinary interactive project with trees that arose out of their extensive work with nature. At the core of this initiative is a specific technique devised in Damanhur that helps reestablish a connection between trees and their original matrix that was intact before most of the old trees of our planet were cut down. Another special device created in Damanhur will allow a tree or plant to modulate sounds to interact with participants and create a real form of communication”.
She then demonstrated with a device that allowed us to experience the Music of the Plants. By singing to the plant, the plant sang back with its vibration thru the device. As each of us sang to the plant, its music got stronger and stronger creating beautiful and unusual music. We learned plants love to be sung to and to have music around them. It gives them a way to connect to us. Again, we are all connected.
This is where you come in
The mission of the project is to educate people about this communication phenomena and encourage us to form small groups to communicate with the trees. Esperide told us that it is important when you are near a tree to tell it how beautiful it is. This awakens their communication with the world, nature, and humans.
The Alliance has small groups of people going into nature to activate the trees. Create a circle around one tree at a time and say a few select prayers for its health and awakening, much the same as you would at a wedding.
This may sound like the flower children of the 60s, but I can assure you it is as real as our current climate change problem. We have to correct the eco-system and human being’s attitudes to how we care for Mother Earth. Helping reconnect the trees is a powerful way to do our part. The trees are the skin of the plant. Let’s help them reconnect again so we can all grow strong.
